Our History

Trinity was founded in 1884.

The old Rectory of Lancaster Court House was the scene of the beginning of Trinity Church. Mrs. Henry Landon Derby, wife of the rector of Christ Church Parish, having a family of small children of her own, started a Sunday School in the Rectory for children of the neighborhood and her own children. There was no church in the village and the nearest church was Grace Church in Kilmarnock, seven miles away and in the opposite direction, St. Mary’s Whitechapel.

The Rectory Sunday School grew and flourished. In short time, the school outgrew the Rectory. It was then that the Reverend Derby asked, “Why not have a church building that will take care of these children and their families?” Thus, Trinity Church was founded in 1884. In the nearly 130 years since its founding, the Sunday School and the Church have had their ups and downs - years of growth and stagnation - but through all these years, Trinity has survived and continues to find a place in the community.

Trinity partners with St. Mary’s White Chapel church, sharing a Rector, staff and many ministries.

For Trinity’s 100th Anniversary, a long time member provided remembrances of the church and its people.
